Trichotillomania Treatments - The Essential Review, Pt. III: Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

 

This week's video focuses on one of the two most specific forms of therapy performed for trichotillomania and other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, or BRFBs, something called Acceptance And Commitment Therapy, or ACT.

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy absolutely has its virtues.

This is why one of the core elements of ACT is in fact a major part of the work we do here at the Trichotillomania Relief Specialists.  

That said, in our opinion, ACT as it is commonly practiced in the conventional mental health community is limited in significant ways.

We'll discuss these limitations in this week's video.  

It's also why we've taken what we believe are the beneficial elements of ACT, put our own stamp on them, and made the appropriate adjustments such that those limitations are now no longer an issue.

Energy Flows Where Your Attention Goes

• “We become what we think about.”

Maybe you’ve heard sayings like these before.  

If so, consider them a crucial reminder of just how important it is to remain mindful of the places you allow your mind to wander.

For example, if you or a loved one are a trichotillomania sufferer, it’s a fair bet to assume you spend a lot of your time thinking about what it’s like to have trichotillomania.  

… And not just “having trichotillomania”, but the pain you are so often forced to endure as a result.

While this is 100% understandable, if the above quotes are accurate, you may for the first time begin to realize the cost of allowing yourself to continue to wallow in such thoughts.

The "Trich Trance"... Just What Is That, Anyway?

 

The “Trich Trance”…  If you or a loved one have suffered with chronic hair-pulling for any length of time, chances are you’re familiar with this term.

But what exactly IS the “trich trance”…  Is there really such a thing?  

I mean, is it even possible to pull hair after hair after hair out of your body - without even noticing you’re doing it?

And how could someone be expected to exercise choice over - and therefore take control of - a behavior they don’t even realize they’re doing??

Turns out there’s a way…  A very effective way.   

… A way of helping foster awareness of this behavior that - interestingly - NEVER FAILS.  And that’s crucial because you can’t exercise choice over a behavior you don’t even know you’re doing, right?
